Rivian wants to sell its trucks to you directly. Legacy auto dealers fight against it. So lame.
The short version:
- Rivian is supporting legislation to allow automakers to sell directly to consumers.
- This is a key step for Rivian’s strategy when it comes to selling its electric vehicles. Otherwise, the company would need to operate under the current dealer franchise model.
- The primary reason given for not supporting the bill is that auto manufacturers could compete directly with their franchise owners.
I’m a big believer in capitalism. It has its flaws, but for the most part, natural market forces will work to everyone’s favor. It drives me crazy when lobbyists push laws that hinder that. The automotive industry is rife with protectionists that want to maintain the status quo, no matter how inefficient, ineffective, or just plain ignorant it is. I’m sure at the time there was a good reason for the law as it stands, but that time has passed. Here’s a crazy idea; how about we let a manufacturer sell its product without creating a layer of middle-men by law.
