Los Angeles lights up the night with solar-powered electricity.
The short version:
- Los Angeles has signed a deal with 8minute Solar Energy to provide 6% to 7% of the city’s solar for the next 25 years.
- The cost is 3.3 cents per kWh. That is the lowest price ever for a contract of this type.
- 8minute Solar Energy has a complex of solar panels and lithium-ion batteries in the Mojave Desert that can supply enough energy for 4 hours each night.
-
California law requires 100% climate-friendly energy by 2045, and this will be a major step forward toward that.
Way to go LA. 7% may not seem like a lot, but it all adds up. Soon other cities will follow that example.
