Load it up peeps, this ferry is all-electric.
The short version:
- The Danes are claiming they have the largest all-electric ferry.
- The ferry “Ellen” is 195 feet long, powered by a 4.3 MWh lithium-ion battery pack, can carry 30 cars and 200 passengers.
- The massive battery pack was made by conversion company Leclanche.
- The ferry should displace 2,000 tons of carbon-dioxide a year, plus 42 tons of nitrogen oxides, 2.5 tons of particulates, and 1.4 tons of sulfur-dioxide every year.
A great example of using electric where it makes sense. Right now we haven’t figured out long-haul shipping, but the short trips that ferries make are perfect for electric boats. Congrats to Denmark for pushing this forward.
