Easthampton wants you to recharge your phone as you rest your legs.

The short story:

  • Easthampton Massachusetts is starting a one-month demonstration of a solar-powered bench/charging station.
  • The city has partnered with Solstreet for the installation.
  • The bench has 6 USB charging ports, LED graphics, and an E Ink digital update board for announcements.
  • The bench did not cost the city any money to install or operate.

There are about 16,000 people living in Easthampton, so although this demonstration seems about as small and low risk as they come, it should be applauded. Hopefully, it will get people thinking of different ways to incorporate solar into their lives. Small changes add up over time.
